Everyone knows a strong defence is the ultimate backbone of every team. Whether you have a formidable partnership of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane standing guard or you have Virgil van Dijk – the best defender in the Premier League by a mile; every team has their defensive maestros.

But then there are those who need to take a long hard look at their season.

Opta and WhoScored are rich sources of data, and it’s easy to figure out which defenders need to improve their game by looking at data for their success rates in duels, tackling and aerial challenges, errors leading to shots and goals and how many times a player has been dribbled past by an opponent.

These players have also been picked from those who have made at least 10 league appearances this season to make things a little fairer on those trying to mark a rare outing with incredible defensive statistics. 

Here are the players who have the worst defending statistics in Europe’s top five leagues so far this season.
