Juventus’ chief football officer, Fabio Paratici, has confirmed the club are in talks to extend Paulo Dybala’s contract after a improved individual season from the Argentine.

The 2018/19 season saw the forward notch only five goals in Serie A, a distinct decrease on his 22-goal haul the prior campaign, sparking rumours that he may be axed in Turin following Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2018 summer arrival.

A move to Tottenham looked for all the world like going through last summer, but the deal fell through at the 11th hour, leaving Dybala to remain in northern Italy. Since then he’s enjoyed something of a renaissance, prompting Juventus to open talks about extending his current deal – which is due to expire in the summer of 2022.

Paratici, speaking to Sky Sports Italy, confirmed his side’s desire to keep hold of Dybala, claiming he is part of the club’s plans for the future.

“We’re working to extend Paulo Dybala’s contract. We want him as part of Juventus for many years,” he said.

He also spoke openly about a number of other players in the squad, confirming that new deals for experienced duo Giorgio Chiellini and Gianluigi Buffon are close to being finalised – with the coronavirus crisis putting a temporary halt on discussions. He also insisted that he hopes Gonzalo Higuain will remain at the club for the final year of his deal.

“Buffon and Chiellini contract talks are on the final straight […] There was this whole situation that interrupted the negotiations,” he revealed. “When he [Higuain] left, he was very worried in general due to personal reasons. He’s a very sensitive man. We are fond of him, he’s having an extraordinary season, so we hope that he can continue with us for the year that remains on his contract.”

Some reports had emerged recently in the Spanish and Italian media regarding a potential swap deal with Juventus and Barcelona between Miralem Pjanić and Arthur, something Paratici refused to discount.

He concluded: “Swap deals with Barcelona like Arthur-Pjanic? We’re speaking with Barça as we do with many top clubs because it will be a particular summer. We need ideas, swap deals and something new on next summer for transfers market.”
