Brazil and Barcelona legend, Rivaldo has opened up on fellow countryman, Philippe Coutinho’s failure to adjust to life at the Nou Camp, revealing that, Lionel Messi’s tendency to attract all the headlines is the reason for his failure.
Much was expected from Coutinho when Barcelona splurged a staggering £142million for the him in January 2018, though the Brazilian struggled to live up to expectations at the club and was soon sent packing on loan to Bayern Munich.
The 27-year-old has not been able to impress in Germany either as Bayern decided not to sign him on a permanent basis and instead will send him back to his parent club at the end off the season. Rivaldo for his part believes that Messi is “partly to blame” for Coutinho’s struggles with the Catalan giants.
“I always believed that Philippe Coutinho had the ability to succeed at Barcelona, but things were taking too much time and both parties agreed on a transfer to Bayern Munich. I’m a little disappointed about his failure in gaining a regular place in the first team, but perhaps he was no longer confident about it and unhappy, so he opted for a move to another big club trying to finally recover his best football from his time at Liverpool,” he said to Betfair.
“It’s never easy to find your space in a team where Lionel Messi constantly takes all the credit and responsibility. here are few players in the world capable of reaching such a situation and imposing themselves, and maybe Coutinho didn’t have enough patience to find his spot in the team.
“The Argentinian star is the team leader and will keep playing at his best level for about three or four more years, so it is difficult to see other players shining at their best at Barcelona.”
It will be interesting to see where the Brazilian ends up next season, considering that Barcelona are keen to sell him on a permanent basis, with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United reportedly interested in his services.
