Barcelona’s decision to sell Philippe Coutinho this summer could end up costing Liverpool over £35m, according to various reports. The Reds sold Coutinho to Barcelona for £142 million in January 2018, but it has been reported by the Daily Mail that Liverpool may not receive a fair chunk of that fee.

Those include a large payment between £14.5m and £20m for 100 Barcelona appearances, but Coutinho is some way off that having only played 55 matches. It has been stated that £35million of the fee for Coutinho was based on performance bonuses.

The former Liverpool player struggled to find his feet at Barcelona who loaned him out to Bayern Munich this season, and are ready to listen to offers for the player in the summer.

The report in the Daily Mail also claims that Liverpool will lose money as Coutinho has not lived up to those performance bonuses. Additionally, Barcelona would have to pay Liverpool a fee if they won the Champions League during his time at the club.

Despite breaking their transfer record to sign the Brazil international, Barca are reportedly open to offers in excess of £90m. Bayern have already refused to sign Coutinho on a permanent transfer, thereby leaving the door open for other clubs to make an approach for the 27-year-old.

A move back to the Premier League has been mooted, and the talented midfielder isn’t short of suitors in the English top flight. In recent months Manchester UnitedArsenalChelseaTottenham, and Everton have all been linked with signing Coutinho.

Liverpool are also perpetually linked with their former talisman, but Coutinho heading back to Anfield seems highly unlikely.
