Sergio Ramos is poised to renew his Real Madrid contract for a further year once the Spanish title race has concluded.

Ramos’ current deal at the Bernabeu expires at the end of the 2020/21 season – by which time the defender will have celebrated his 35th birthday.

However, his role in Real’s title charge remains as important than ever, with the Spanish international hitting a stunning second-half free kick to seal a 2-0 victory over Mallorca on Wednesday and send his side back to the summit of La Liga.

According to Spanish news outlet ABC, Ramos wants to renew his contract for a further year, but negotiations will be put on pause until the season finishes as the Real captain is fully focussed on securing a fifth La Liga title.

Los Blancos are currently level on points with rivals Barcelona, but sit top of the table due to their superior head to head record.

Real really gained the title momentum on Sunday as they negotiated a potential banana skin with a 2-1 victory over Champions League chasing Real Sociedad, after Barcelona had lost ground with a 0-0 draw against Sevilla on Friday.

Ramos and Real are in a slight disagreement in regards to the contract salary, with the player asking for an increase and the club looking to stick to his current wage package of €12m per year.

Manager Zinedine Zidane dropped a Ramos contract hint to the Real top brass following his side’s victory over Mallorca, making it clear where he sees his captain’s future.

“Sergio belongs here as a player,” Zidane said at full time [via Goal]. “He’s been here for years and he should retire here. It’s what I think and I’ll stand by it.”

Ramos has spent 15 years at Real after signing from Sevilla in 2005. He has gone on to enjoy a highly decorated career in the Spanish capital, winning four league titles, two Copa del Rey and four Champions Leagues.
