Sevilla sporting director Monchi has dismissed claims that the Andalusian side are interested in signing Barcelona‘s Ivan Rakitic this summer. Last month, Rakitic admitted that he has “a special affection” for Sevilla and hinted that he could make a return to Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan amid uncertainty over his future at Camp Nou.
The Croatia international is contracted with the LaLiga giants until 2021, but Sevilla are reported to be interested in the midfielder.
However, Monchi dismissed the suggestions and said there was nothing to the speculation.
“I’m not going to discover who Ivan Rakitic is – we’re friends,” Monchi told Muchodeporte (h/t Marca).
“Rakitic and Sevilla have absolutely nothing [to do with each other], to be honest. I’ve spoken to Ivan once or twice about his family and he’s asked about mine. Now is not the time [for transfer talk]. Honestly, there’s absolutely nothing at the moment. Everything that is going on at Barcelona has nothing to do with Seville .”
The sporting director also talked about Sevilla’s possible signings. “We’re waiting to see what happens. It doesn’t mean we are doing nothing, but we are getting information to be able to draw up the different scenarios. A message of calm: we are not doing nothing, but we are acting sensibly.”
Meanwhile, Rakitic has been talking about the transfer rumors to Sky in Germany. The 32-year-old said he is used to all the speculation about his future. He also insisted he is happy at the club and would like to see out his contract that runs until next summer.
“I’ve still got a contract, when I sign a contract I always intend to fulfil it, and if that cannot happen for any reason, then we’ll sit down together and talk about it,” he said. “But for the moment, I am very happy here and I am thinking about other stuff.”
