Courtois additionally indicated that he used to closely watch Edwin van der Sar, whose style was similar to his.
“When Iker [Casillas] started playing for Real Madrid, I watched his games and became a goalkeeper because of him,” Courtois said on social media, as reported by Marca.
The Belgian shot-stopper continued, “I liked to watch him, and I loved Real Madrid. When at the age of 14 I saw that I was very tall and skinny, I followed Van der Sar a lot because he was closer to my style.”
Courtois also went on to praise Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s quality and skills with his feet as well as Atletico’s Jan Oblak’s shot blocking ability.
He said as he concluded, “He (Ter Stegen) handles blocking [shots] very well, like [Jan] Oblak. He is the best in the game with his feet, just like Real Sociedad’s [Alex] Remiro which surprised me. I like him [ter Stegen} on one-on-one [situations] because he comes from the German school [of goalkeeping]. He gets the knee down very fast and stretches the other leg. [To do that] You must be very flexible.”
